Update: OC deputies fatally shoot man armed with hatchet during burglary in Midway City, authorities say
An Orange County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a suspect during an alleged break-in at a home.Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a suspect armed with a hatchet during an alleged burglary Wednesday morning at a home in the Midway City area, authorities said.
Deputies responded to the house in the 14000 block of Van Buren Street around 5 a.m., just north of the 405 Freeway according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Authorities said the suspect was also "vandalizing property." At some point, two deputies came into contact with the suspect and opened fire, investigators said. That individual, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene after the deputies administered first aid.
The Sheriff's Department later released a photo of the hatchet, which appeared to have a wooden handle and a rusted metal blade.In accordance with protocol, from the Orange County district attorney's office were among those summoned to the scene. Several streets in the area were closed to traffic as the investigation continued throughout the morning.
