Little-known nonprofit foundation representing construction labor unions challenged environmental reports
Appeals by a little-known nonprofit challenging two large, recently approved Oceanside development projects were denied this week by the Oceanside City Council.
The appeals heard at Wednesday’s council meeting objected to the approval of the Ionis Pharmaceuticals research and development facility to be built in Oceanside’s 465-acre El Corazon Park, and to the 323 apartments to be built in the Modera Melrose development on 7.4 acres at the corner of Melrose Drive and West Bobier Drive. The Oceanside Planning Commission approved the Moderna Melrose project April 10 and the Ionis project April 24.
City officials said the environmental documents for both projects were more than adequate and they meet or exceed all required standards. A different group, San Diegans for Sustainable, Economic and Equitable Development , filed a similar appeal last year of other large project, Ocean Kamp, a proposed resort with a three-story hotel, restaurants, shops and 700 homes to be built around an artificial surf lagoon in the San Luis Rey Valley.
