The 26-year-old, who comes from a line of Treaty leaders, uses his political role to rewrite policies and titles to be gender-inclusive.
That has meant raising the Pride flag at the school, creating gender-neutral bathrooms, honouring two-spirit people at Ochapowace’s powwow, and setting up education sessions for staff members and leadership.
Recently retired Chief Margaret Bear has been working closely with George on these initiatives. So far, she has already seen that two-spirit people are feeling more loved and welcomed in Ochapowace.Article content “I am a headperson, which is our name for our councillors,” said George. “We usually go by ‘headman’ or ‘headwoman,’ but because I sometimes use they/them pronouns, I chose to go with ‘headperson.’”
“And knowing that my people support me, it feels so good to be the youngest and the first two-spirit headperson, and I’m so proud of that. And I feel so proud of my nation, as well.”
