An 81-year-old Danish woman is arrested in Poland after customs officers become suspicious and find heroin with a street value of more than $700,000 in her luggage.

An 81-year-old woman caught with five kilograms of heroin stashed under a false suitcase bottom at a Warsaw airport could face up to 15 years in prison.

The Danish woman was arrested last week after heroin with a street value of more than $US515,000 was found in her luggage, Polish officials said. Customs officers at Frederic Chopin Airport checked the woman's bags after becoming suspicious of her itinerary and uneasy behaviour.The octogenarian was travelling from Africa to Canada.

She told officials her family had given her the suitcase with gifts for relatives in Canada, according to Aleksandra Skrzyniarz, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Warsaw.Under Polish law, she faces up to 15 years in prison for illegal possession of narcotics. Denmark officials confirmed a Danish citizen was detained in Poland and said the ministry was "providing consular assistance".
