An off-duty police officer has been identified as the man who drowned at a New South Wales beach on New Year’s Day after saving a teenager stuck in a riptide.

The 45-year-old, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, died after successfully rescuing a teenager caught in a riptide at Bogola Beach, on the state’s south coast.

Emergency services were called to the scene south of Narooma at about 1:30pm on January 1, following reports a man was pulled from the water unconscious.
