Darren Almendarez, 51, was killed Thursday night following an exchange of gunfire in a grocery store parking lot, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed at a news conference.An off-duty Harris County sheriff’s deputy was killed Thursday night following an exchange of gunfire in a grocery store parking lot, authorities say.
At a news conference late Thursday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Almendarez’s wife was with him before the shooting started, but because he told her to run, she was unharmed during the incident. Gonzalez said two of the suspects were struck by Almendarez and were also taken to the hospital. Both were in stable condition. A third suspect remains at large, he said. The suspects have not been identified.
Gonzalez said Almendarez was at the grocery store Thursday to prepare to make dinner for his sister’s birthday celebration Friday, and the family is “distraught.”
