Aidan Becker, a 22-year-old off-duty security guard, has been identified as the individual who tragically lost his life while bravely intervening to protect a teenage boy during a violent armed robbery at Mernda station in Melbourne 's outer north. The incident occurred around 5:50 pm on Friday. According to police reports, Becker, acting as a good Samaritan, stepped in to assist a 14-year-old boy who was being assaulted.
He escorted the teen away from the platform, attempting to de-escalate the situation and ensure the boy's safety. However, the group of alleged offenders followed them, escalating the confrontation into a brutal attack. Homicide Squad Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange described the attack as “savage,” involving punches, kicks, and the use of edged weapons against Becker. Bystanders, witnessing the horrific assault, immediately rushed to provide first aid. Paramedics arrived shortly after, but sadly, Becker succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The community is mourning the loss of a hero who selflessly put himself in harm's way to help another.
