A Nottinghamshire Police officer is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a train while attempting to save a distressed man. Police were deployed to the Newark village of Balderton at around 7pm on Thursday over concerns for a man's safety.
British Transport Police are now leading an investigation after the officer was left with serious injuries. The injuries suffered by the man on the railway lines are not thought to be life-threatening.Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: "This is a truly devastating incident that has left one of our officers very poorly in hospital. We are supporting his family and ensuring that he gets all the care and support he needs.
