Officers tell Wieambilla inquest of efforts to rescue Constable Keely Brough and retrieve bodies of Rachel McCrow and Matthew ArnoldPolice officers have broken down giving a harrowing account to an inquest of their actions rescuing a "hunted" colleague from religious extremists, and the retrieval of two fallen constables. On December 12, 2022, four police officers were ambushed at a Wains Road property at Wieambilla.

Senior Constable Duncan Miller told the inquest he and a team of officers were tasked with rescuing Constable Brough.Upon arriving at the front gate of the property and setting up a cordon, he was told Constable Brough didn't believe the team were actually police. He told the inquest Constable Brough embraced another officer, and he could see she wasn't physically injured, but traumatised.Senior Constable Andrew Gates was ahead of Senior Constable Miller, inside the fencing of the property."I see Keely run down the left in the open, I say, 'stay in cover and get to the fence line'.

Once the team had gotten the fallen officers into the vehicle, he told the inquest he was screaming at his colleague driving, to get the bodies to safety. She said she immediately knew the importance of securing the front gate of the Trains property, and sped down in her vehicle with two other officers.

"I grew up on a farm, so I know guns, and this was big and it was close, and I thought we're in trouble, serious trouble here, I thought it was large calibre and close.""He screamed 'Lizzie run' and I got to him — I ran rubber legged over to him, he pulled me behind him," she said.
