Two of Cuyahoga County’s top officials are trading blame and incendiary accusations over the future of the jail, now that a committee considering whether to renovate or build new has put plans on hold until it receives more information.

There are times when Lambert said they’ve had to advise against discussing some aspects about the jail in public forums, especially with two class action lawsuits pending regarding “unconstitutional conditions of confinement,” but “that’s quite a bit different...than telling someone to be less than honest,” he said.
“Now, we have to figure out how to get there as fast as we can, as safe as we can, and I think that’s where we butt,’ Gallagher said. “But if I came off aggressive then yes, I was wrong. Jail Administrator Ronda Gibson reiterated those concerns and spoke to fluctuating temperatures in the jail, water leaks when it rains and “blind spots” that pose security risks. “I think it’s imperative to move forward with finding a new location and getting that jail built,” Tuma said.
