Two people armed with long rifles “targeted” a kosher deli that was at the center of a massive shootout Tuesday, opening fire as soon as they walked inside the store, authorities said this morning
Authorities had initially indicated the shootout, during which both attackers died, was not related to terrorism and may have been tied to a prior crime. The incident came after the suspects were believed to have shot and killed a police officer in a nearby cemetery just minutes before.
The mayor and the city’s public safety director, James Shea, did not explicitly label the shooting an anti-Semitic attack and said they did not know the specific motive. But both said they believed more people would have been killed if officers hadn’t responded so quickly. There are numerous schools in the area, including anext to the market where one witness had said as many as 100 children were trapped during the shootout.
“There are multiple other people on the street, so there were many of other targets available to them that they bypassed to attack that place,” Shea said. “Clearly, that was their target and they intended to attack people in that place.” The president and governor spoke around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the shootings, Murphy’s office said.
