The unveiling of Elon Musk’s futuristic new pickup truck didn’t quite go as planned
’s futuristic new pickup truck didn’t quite go as planned. Showing off the highly-anticipated Cybertruck in Los Angeles on Thursday, the Tesla founder bragged about the new electric vehicle’s durability, claiming its windows could withstand gunshots. To prove his point, Musk asked chief designer“Oh my fucking god,” Musk exclaimed as the driver’s side window cracked. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard.” So Von Holzhausen lobbed a second ball at one of the back windows, which also broke.
The bungled demonstration was the lowlight of a highly anticipated unveiling of Tesla’s new electric truck, set to go into production in 2021. It’s an aesthetically strange vehicle with a cyberpunk design, like something you might run errands with in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. As the Verge’sin a post-ride review, the truck also seems engineered for such a dystopia: supposedly capable of traveling more than 250 miles on a full battery and of towing nearly four tons.
With production not expected to begin until 2021, Tesla has time to smooth out the kinks. Still, the company will have some work to do to back up its claims about the Cybertruck. “This obviously wasn’t a true production vehicle so Tesla gets a pass for now,”. “But if they are going to market the glass as a differentiator, they better be able to show stronger tests leading up to launch.
Still, Musk appeared unruffled, laughing and pointing out that “it didn’t go through!” He added, “We’ll just fix it in post.”
