Developed originally for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Cleveland Play House's CARE program not only exposes kids to the arts but also gives them a way to deal with the stressors and traumas of daily life. The Ohio Arts Council has awarded nearly $700,000 to fund teaching residencies using the CARE curriculum to 17 individual Cleveland schools, as well as two other area schools.
Classes are taught by professional theater personnel, many of whom hold degrees in child psychology or social work. Games, monologues and skits are used to get children to think - if not talk - about the stress in their lives.
“Think about it this way, if a child has never had an experience in the theater, or gotten to go and see a symphony, or never had a chamber ensemble appear in their school, they might never have that chance,” explained Small, when asked why such a significant investment was made here in Cleveland. “Those experiences can totally set a child on a path for success for the rest of their life.
Prior to the Ohio Arts Council’s funding, the CARE program received multi-year grants to CMSD from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the programs in the schools here.
