Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost participated in one of eight panels during the Kindland Summit at Cleveland State University, September 22, 2023. The summit’s goal is developing envisioning a kinder community.COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is telling voters what he thinks the legal effects will be if voters approve a state ballot measure this November legalizing recreational marijuana for those 21 and older.
Yost, a Republican, released a legal analysis summarizing his office’s view of State Issue 2, proposed by a coalition of licensed Ohio medical marijuana businesses. As an initiated statute, it is proposed as a law that the General Assembly could amend and repeal if the voters passed it. Yost similarly also released a legal analysis on Thursday detailing his office’s views on State Issue 1, which would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.
The attorney general is the state’s top lawyer, a role that involves defending state laws in court, but not publicly weighing in on the effects of state ballot issues. But Yost said this week he decided to chime in on the two ballot issues because of what he views as public misunderstanding of what the measures would do.
He said he plans to produce similar analyses on future ballot issues through 2026, when he will leave office due to term limits. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
