Asked about President Biden’s request that states temporarily halt their gas taxes amid record prices, a spokesman for Gov. DeWine repeated arguments the governor made against scaling back the tax earlier this year. But he didn’t categorically rule it out.

Mike DeWine on Wednesday repeated arguments the governor made against scaling back the tax earlier this year.Dan Tierney, the spokesman for the governor’s office, said DeWine will have to see exactly what Biden is proposing.
Ohio’s gas tax, meanwhile, is 38.5 cents a gallon for regular gas and 47 cents a gallon for diesel. It was 28 cents a gallon for both until 2019, when DeWine and state lawmakers, with bipartisan support, hiked it to raise extra funding for roads and bridges. The gas tax in Ohio is split between state and local government, and raised $2.4 billion in 2021, according to the Ohio Department of Taxation.
Tierney on Wednesday also said Biden deserves blame for the increased gas prices for restricting fossil fuel supply and not doing enough to expand refining and distribution capacity.
