Backers of House Bill 189 say constitutional guarantees shouldn't be taxed.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio House Republicans are pushing legislation that would offer $10 million per year in refundable tax credits to guns and ammunition manufacturers who expand operations.Ohio House Rep. Al Cutrona, a Mahoning County Republican who sponsored the bill, pitched the idea as a job creator and gun rights protector.
The committee has reviewed the bill twice, each time in tandem with Democratic-led and somewhat similar legislation to scrap sales and use taxes on gun safety devices like locks or safes. In contrast to a range of more ambitious anti-gun violence proposals offered by Democrats in the past, several Republicans have indicated support for exempting safety devices from sales tax.would limit tax credits for gun and ammunition manufacturers to $10 million per year in total.
On Tuesday, Christopher Lee of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said the state shouldn’t tax constitutional rights. For instance, Ohioans haven’t paid a sales tax on newspapers, generally protected by the First Amendment,In committee earlier this month, Isaacsohn said to Cutrona there is a clear and causal correlation between the number of guns in America and the people who die at the barrel of one.
“I don’t think anyone is promoting death and destruction,” Cutrona said. “Some people would arguably say the way that our children are being sexualized in the film industry also causes a lot of dysphoria here in the state.”
