. As Americans move around, the populations of some districts increase, and others decrease. This results in voters in highly populated districts having less of a say than voters in districts with fewer people. In the hopes of ensuring that everyone’s vote has equal value, the district lines are redrawn so that districts have equal populations. This process is known as redistricting.
The importance of redistricting cannot be overstated. Again, it is the process we undertake to ensure that each person’s vote has an equal value. In a democracy, where a person’s vote is their power, few things are more important. We Americans disagree on a great many things, but I believe most of us would agree that no one’s vote should have more power or impact than anyone else’s. One person. One vote.
