During the pandemic, Ohio drivers put the pedal to the metal on largely empty roads. But as traffic volumes return to normal, speeding hasn't stopped.

Once traffic volumes returned to normal, the speeding would abate, right? Data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol show tickets for motorists going 20 miles per hour over the posted limits and for driving more than 100 mph have continued to climb: : 76,173 tickets for 20 mph above speed limit and 3,987 tickets for going 100-plus mph.Pandemic Traffic:The 100-plus tickets declined in the first four months of 2022 over the same period in 2021.

Traffic safety experts point to other pandemic trends that don't seem to be going away: an uptick in driving under the influence of drugs and or alcohol and an increase in people not wearing seatbelts.Traffic fatalities in Ohio totaled 1,356 in 2021 – the highest since 2002. Fatal crashes rose 6.5% in 2020 over 2019 and climbed another 10% in 2021 over 2020.

Ohio's trends mirror those happening nationwide, according to Jonlee Anderle, regional administrator for the The U.S. Department of Transportation on Monday announced $1 billion in community grants to improve safety and prevent roadway deaths. The money will go to projects that are designed to reduce deaths and injuries involving pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
