When Republicans take control of the U.S. House of Representatives in January, U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce will have a seat at the leadership table, representing a faction of roughly 50 centrist members he calls “the majority makers.”

As part of their campaign to pressure McCarthy in exchange for their speakership votes, Freedom Caucus members have said they want to restore a rule that would allow any member of the legislative body to force a vote to oust the speaker at any moment. Joyce says the conference might end up instituting a compromise broached by Ohio’s Turner that would require half the conference to support ousting the Speaker, instead of any one member.
He said Biggs has shown he’s not a viable candidate for the job, and “you can’t beat somebody with nobody.” He expects that they might go through more than one round of votes before opponents realize they’ve got “no path to victory” and coalesce behind McCarthy. Joyce says he’s let the Freedom Caucus know that if McCarthy strikes deals with the Freedom Caucus, other Republican organizations including his own could play the same game and demand concessions the Freedom Caucus wouldn’t agree with.Instead of requiring that all its demands be met, he says his group is more in the mold of President Ronald Reagan, who regarded getting 70% to 80% of what he wanted as a good deal.
