Five questions Ohio State football answered during the first third of the season.

One of Knowles’ favorite stats is stop rate — the percentage of drives that end in a punt, takeaway or turnover on downs.at 85.3%. That ratio will likely drop as the season goes along due to better opponents ahead. But the Buckeyes’ historic 2019 defense led the nation in stop rate at 82.5%.

There aren’t many more metrics by which to scrutinize this performance. The trends right now are not merely towards improvement, they are towards elite status. More surprising is Chip Trayanum’s No. 2 spot on the running back snaps list — also by a wide margin. He’ll line up in various spots, acting as a fullback or even inline tight end if needed. Yet he’ll also line up in a traditional tailback role, as evidenced by his go-ahead touchdown plunge against the Irish.

No position group will benefit from the bye week more, because no other group needs the same combination of review, critique and fundamental work. The realistic goal has never been to lift this starting group to last season’s standard. Denzel Burke has allowed a completion on only six of 18 targets. That’s a drop of 23% from last year’s rate. He is creating a presence with words and actions.
