If Notre Dame’s attack -- talented stable of running backs, bully-blocking offensive linemen -- looked familiar, good eye. Because that’s the same formula Jim Harbaugh has deployed while rebuilding Michigan into a national championship contender. The Wolverines have ranked third and 18th nationally in yards per game the last two seasons behind talented backs and big bullies. They’ve beaten Ohio State in both years.
That seems like a pattern, even a blueprint. And for most of Saturday’s game, Notre Dame showed the country that it still works against an Ohio State defense that boasts plenty of talent, entered this week ranked second nationally, and in Day’s estimation played with an abundance of toughness against the Irish.
