Oil and natural-gas futures extended a pullback from multiyear highs Thursday, a day after a larger-than-expected rise in U.S. crude inventories and remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin assuring Europe that Moscow would honor its gas commitments.

November natural-gas futures NG00, -3.08% NGX21, -3.08% fell 3.3% to $5.488 per million British thermal units, after dropping 10.1% the previous session. Natural gas ended Tuesday at its highest since December 2008. The chief executive of Saudi Aramco earlier this week had said the gas-to-oil shift would add 500,000 barrels a day of demand to the oil market, he noted.
