Sooners offense shows why it is best in nation in opening victory
Oklahoma players celebrate with Jana Johns during Game 1 of the team's NCAA Women's College World Series softball championships against Texas in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. OKLAHOMA CITY — Sure, Texas could try pitching around Oklahoma’s Jocelyn Alo. Coach Mike White could just instruct his staff to throw right into the dirt to keep the bat affixed to the shoulder of college softball’s greatest home-run hitter.
The rest of the Sooners reveled in delivering body blows to their rival, lifting a combined six home runs into the record crowd of 12,234, which was predominantly crimson and cream. By game’s end — there’s no run rule in the WCWS finals — Oklahoma had compiled 16 hits to Texas’ three. Alo erased that momentary lead in the bottom half with one vigorous swing, launching Texas starter Hailey Dolcini’s pitch into the left-field bleachers for a two-run home run. The Longhorns had a couple chances to limit the damage, but Dolcini, who’s been integral to this unprecedented postseason run, misplayed two potential double-play grounders to keep the inning alive.
Alo hit two home runs off two pitchers. Second baseman Tiare Jennings launched a pair of homers off a pair of pitchers. Third baseman Jana Johns punched a solo shot over the left-field wall off Hulon. And Oklahoma added to its lead every single inning, plating at least a pair of runs in all but the second frame.
