Experts are urging older Australians to help make up a shortfall of blood donations, even though in the past they’ve been less likely to become donors if they weren’t already.
Experts are urging older Australians to become blood donors to help fill a short-term gap caused by the ongoing pandemic and flu season.
“But not long after that I had to have a blood transfusion myself and so that reinforced the positive in donating blood.”Rogan had to have an emergency hysterectomy after a significant bleed and had to have a large blood transfusion which saved her life. Rogan, now 67, donates blood four-to-five times a year, and is almost a textbook example of a typical blood donor, according to UQ psychology Professor Barbara Masser.Masser is the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Donor Research Chair and an expert on blood donor recruitment and retention.
“The trouble is it’s not something people tend to take up when they’re older – people will continue to donate through to their later years, but it’s not common for someone to start post-50.” Gay and bisexual men, as well as trans women, are still banned from donating if they had sex with a man less than three months prior.
