The 33-year-old, who is based in Kenya, returned a positive test which was backed up by B-sample testing. An adverse analytical finding was discovered after an in-competition doping control test at the Manchester Great Race in May last year.
"Mr Robertson elected to have his B sample tested and this confirmed the original result," a Sports Tribunal of New Zealand statement read. "The parties subsequently filed a joint memorandum stating Mr Robertson did not contest the tampering breach and was no longer seeking a reduced sanction for the original ADVRs."While he initially accepted the presence of the banned substance, Robertson tried to fight the violation by claiming he attended a COVID-19 vaccination centre but was treated for the virus and administered EPO.
DFSNZ made allegations the statements and supporting documents from Robertson included falsified documentation and false testimony, tantamount to a rule breach for tampering. Robertson later abandoned his defence. New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO and secretary general Nicki Nicol added, "The offences committed by Zane Robertson are deeply disappointing and his actions go against everything the New Zealand team stands for.
