Great Britain’s most decorated swimmer of all time has been upset sensationally in Paris and denied a slice of Olympic history. Adam Peaty was shooting for his third consecutive gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, and would have been just the second male swimmer to achieve the feat in a single event after American Michael Phelps. But he was edged out by Italian Nicolo Martinenghi, whose 59.03 time was just 0.

“Oh, what an upset, by two one-hundredths of a second as well. Can you believe it?” she said. “And in fact, it’s equal-second! So, Adam Peaty and Nic Fink will share the silver medal.” Speaking in tears after the race, the eight-time world champion said he had no regrets. “In my heart I’ve already won,” Peaty said. “I’m not crying because I’m second. I’m crying because I knew how much it took to get here.” Peaty took two years away from the sport after Tokyo, citing mental health struggles.
