Paris has used its unique sights and attractions as the backdrop to its Games. But in terms of organisation too, this is the one that Brisbane must learn from in 2032.
Already a subscriber?Australia’s women on water have delivered stunning sporting success during the first week of the 2024 Olympics, in which host city Paris has shone as a venue, even if the sun didn’t always. Success in the swimming pool and the white water rapids means Australia began day six on Friday fourth on the medal table – depending on how you count them – behind only the giants of China and the US, and host nation France.
The Games began last weekend with Australia’s best opening day ever, with three golds – the first by Grace Brown in the women’s cycling time trial – then two in the pool. By the end of Thursday, Australia had 11 swimming medals and five golds, all female, capped by two freestyle relay wins. Mollie O’Callaghan and talisman Ariarne Titmus already had individual golds in the 200 metre and 400 metre freestyle.
