The International Olympic Committee is under pressure to act after a female Italian boxer withdrew from competition after suffering a brutal blow from an opponent who had previously been banned for having elevated testosterone levels.

“I had to safeguard my life, I was hit so hard I couldn’t breathe anymore,” Carini told reporters after pulling out of the competition. The IOC cleared Khelif to box in Paris despite the International Boxing Association disqualifying her from last year’s world championships after revealing she had returned tests that showed elevated testosterone levels.

But the IOC has defended its position, instead blaming the “current aggression being directed towards two athletes” on the gender testing conducted by the IBA."All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition's eligibility and entry regulations.
