The omicron variant is causing a “tidal wave” of coronavirus cases in Ohio unlike anything seen earlier in the pandemic, the state’s health director said Thursday.

That’s the highest 21-day average at any point during the pandemic, ODH Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said during a news briefing.

The sheer volume in cases is also straining hospitals throughout Ohio. The state has seen a record number of coronavirus hospitalizations this month, including 6,607 on Thursday, according to data from the Ohio Hospital Association. The total is up from 5,756 on New Year’s Day and far higher than the 2,172 seen during the peak of the surge from the delta variant back on Nov. 6.

Furthermore, the sheer number of cases in Ohio is causing hospitalizations to skyrocket, said Dr. Jennifer Forrester, the associate chief medical officer at UC Health in Cincinnati. “The constraint on our capacity, the historic volumes that we’re seeing, is being felt by everyone right now.”Ohio National Guard members to assist at hospitals
