McCarthy's compromises with Democrats have upset some hardliners.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., talks to reporters amid news that Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., one of his harshest critics, plans to use a procedural tool — called a motion to vacate — to try and strip McCarthy of his office as soon as this week, at the Capitol in Washington, Monday, Oct. 2, 2023.

“It’s a privilege to be in the chair for a history-making event,” Ellzey said. “These motions have never been successful, and I don’t anticipate it will be this time, either.”Gaetz acknowledged that possibility but said he will try again and again. He predicted the number of Republican votes to ditch McCarthy will grow over time.Gaetz needs only a handful of Republicans to side with him in voting to remove McCarthy, if House Democrats vote with them.

“I want to get these [appropriations] bills done,” Rep. Keith Self, R-McKinney, said as he walked onto the House floor before Gaetz made his motion. “My focus right now is on the appropriations process and making sure we pass these spending bills with conservative priorities and at a fiscally responsible level,” Cloud said.
