and the likely response of the Federal Reserve Board sank in. There’ll now be a nervous couple of days as investors wait to see what the Fed actually does later this week.
The market had anticipated that the Fed would lift US rates by 50 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day meeting this Wednesday and had factored in one more 50 basis point increase in July before two 25 basis point rises later in the year. Like bond market inversions, bear markets don’t always precede a recession, although recessions are almost always preceded by bear markets.
. Those who bought into the nadir of the pandemic-related plunge in March 2020 are still about 60 per cent in front.
