The market had anticipated that the Fed would lift US rates by 50 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day meeting this Wednesday and had factored in one more 50 basis point increase in July before two 25 basis point rises later in the year. Like bond market inversions, bear markets don’t always precede a recession, although recessions are almost always preceded by bear markets.
