A teach-in this week offered lessons learned from the occupation of Conklin Hall in February 1969

On the morning of Feb. 24, 1969, members of the Black Organization of Students, or BOS, seized control of and, a newly-built classroom building on University Avenue. At the time, Black students comprised just 4.4% of the Rutgers-Newark undergraduate population, which was 2.1% Latino.

“Today’s claim that this campus is the most diverse in the country was because 16 students risked their lives,” said Donaldson, 74, who graduated from Rutgers Law School, practiced law for several years, then ran the City of Newark’s department of health and community wellness. She told the rapped audience that BOS considered some action for two years and that planning for the occupation took months, requiring help from sympathetic campus insiders.

While members of the Rutgers-Newark Black Organization of Students barricaded themselves inside Conklin Hall on Feb. 24-26, 1969, others demonstrated outside. Organizers of this week's strike held a demonstration teach-in that included Vicki Donaldson, now 74, one of 16 students who occupied the building.joined her.
