Roberts is from Gainesville, Florida.SAN ANTONIO — Mission Thanksgiving has been a Fort Sam Houston tradition since Ronald Reagan was president, but soldiers from the Army’s Medical Center of Excellence won’t leave the post to share dinner with host families again this fall.

But this will be the third straight year that the Army hasn’t paired troops with San Antonio households for a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal. The custom is “not dead at all,” insisted MEDCoE spokeswoman Tish Williamson. COVID-19 took a heavy toll on events like this. The Air Force canceled its Operation Home Cooking with everyone else, but last year restarted it, allowing basic trainees and others from two squadrons to leave Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland on Thanksgiving Day.

At Fort Sam, the Army launched Mission Thanksgiving in 1983. It, too, matched soldiers with local families eager to treat them to a home-cooked meal and a taste of the civilian life they’d known before joining up. MEDCoE’s Williamson said soldiers there decided to remain with their peers this Thanksgiving, “participating in a variety of large-group social events rather than dividing into smaller buddy-teams to be hosted for dinner with community families.
