“It would be an investment by other states if they sent supply in to help Victoria knuckle this one down. It’s of benefit to everyone in Australia that the current outbreak in Victoria is suppressed”
Following Professor Cheng’s comments, a spokesperson for federal Health Minister Greg Hunt disputed that there was a Pfizer shortage in Victoria. The spokesperson said as of Thursday morning Victoria had approximately 160,000 Pfizer vaccines and approximately 160,000 AstraZeneca vaccines. A further delivery of 71,370 Pfizer vaccines will be delivered on Friday.
Dr McRae of the Australian Medical Association backed Professor Cheng, saying the Victorian and federal governments must do everything they can to increase the supply of Pfizer, including requesting doses be redirected from other states and overseas. However, Australian Medical Association national president Omar Khorshid said vaccines alone will not pull Victorians out of the crisis.
“One of the interesting things about Victoria right now is there is a very high level of demand for the vaccine, and one of the reasons we know people have been hesitant to come forward for the vaccine in the past is thinking they won’t be able to get the vaccine,” he said.“It’s also the case that in Victoria there is a greater need for it, so it should be reallocated.”
“I would be in favour of diverting what supply we have to where it is most needed. In general, a national co-ordinated approach that fills demand where it comes up rather than a state-by-state approach would be best,” he said. “Because the majority of COVID-19 cases occur in 20 to 39 age group, vaccines should be immediately deployed to halt any potential transmission among younger people.
