“It is not yet clear if there has been an increase in hepatitis cases, or an increase in awareness of hepatitis cases that occur at the expected rate but go undetected,” WHO said in a statement.
With the right medical attention the condition can usually be treated, but some patients may require a liver transplant, says Conor Meehan, a senior lecturer in microbiology at Nottingham Trent University.Beijing races to contain ‘urgent and grim’ COVID-19 outbreak after 22 new casesThe causes of hepatitis cases can be varied, but in children it is usually associated with viral infections, says Meehan.
Other viruses such as adenoviruses - a common cold virus - can cause hepatitis, but this is rare, says Meehan. Meehan said these viruses usually cause infections of the lungs and in immunocompromised patients, can on rare occasions cause hepatitis. “But to see it on this scale is extremely rare, especially in children who don’t appear to be immunocompromised,” he wrote in“If adenovirus is the cause of these cases, it could mean that a new variant of adenovirus has emerged that more easily causes hepatitis.”
