But since the May 21 Federal Election, Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defence Minister Richard Marles have met their Chinese counterparts where they held"frank" and"open" discussions about one another's nations' concerns. He then referenced Chinese-born Australian journalist Cheng Lei - who has been jailed in China on suspicion of"illegally supplying state records overseas" - and security concerns in the Indo-Pacific amid the deal between Beijing and Solomon Islands.
