About 250,000 workers will benefit from a 15 per cent pay rise as part of a mammoth $11.3 billion federal budget commitment.
The historic wage increase is in line with the Fair Work Commission's order for the sector and will cost the government $11.3 billion over four years.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers said said the billion dollar investment will “help create a bigger incentive for young Australians looking for a rewarding career”. The pay boost, which has been described as the largest ever increase for aged care workers, is expected to attract 8,000 workers to either join or rejoin the sector.
“Fair wages play a major role in attracting and retaining workers to provide around the clock care for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people,” Aged Care Minister Anika Wells. The government initially proposed to split the pay rise over two years, funding 10 per cent in 2023 and 5 per cent in 2024, which came under heavy fire from the unions who had been pushing for a 25 per cent increase.
“For too long understaffed aged care workers have been on the front line providing care to some of Australia’s most vulnerable citizens, without proper recognition and on horrendously low pay,” said UWU Aged Care Director Carolyn Smith.
