Automatic software updates are supposed to keep your devices safe and secure. That's not always the case.
Share to twitterOwn an ASUS computer? Researchers with Kaspersky Lab have some rather grim news to share with you. One of the servers that delivers updates to your computer was hacked and it may have pushed dangerous malware to your system.Kaspersky first noticed something was amiss after dating its own software recently, adding a feature that detects attacks just like this one. Kaspersky software observed unexpected code running in the ASUS update app on customers' computers.
The certificate wasn't the only thing that allowed the attack to go unnoticed. Whoever was behind the server hack wasn't interested in launching a large-scale attack. According to Kaspersky, the hackers had selected 600 specific systems. They were identified by their MAC addresses, a unique identifier linked to network adapters.
Other things that might ordinarily raise red flags didn't immediately arouse suspicions either. One VirusTotal uploader noted grammar and spelling mistakes, but those were easily dismissed. Unaffected ASUS apps contained similar errors.
