You may love your work, but are you working too much? Despite a growing awareness of burnout and work-life balance, many of us still see working long hours as a badge of honour.
Malissa Clark took a week off work when her daughter was born. A year later, she realised she was a workaholic. Malissa Clark was several hours into contractions for the birth of her first child when she finally closed her laptop, stopped working and headed to the hospital.
Most people attribute high hours of work to workaholism but it is more complicated, says Dr Clark, the author of Never Not Working: Why the Always On Culture is Bad for Business and How to Fix It.Regardless of external pressures, individuals may experience an "inner pressure to work" all the time.Dr Clark describes this tendency as "frantic multi-tasking".
"I didn't tell anyone at work because in the industry that I worked in, I think there's a lot of workaholics and workaholism.Dr Karl knows the best app for free podcasts, radio, music, news and audiobooks … and you don’t need to be a scientist to find it!Hazel adopted a number of tools to approach her work differently.
"I had one job in the morning and one job in the afternoon. And then I would go to the gym or the pool or something after work, but then I would do stuff in the evenings as well.""I'd fall asleep, I'd kind of go unconscious virtually because I was so tired.
Initially Dr Clark tried mindfulness as a recovery strategy for her work addiction, but she found more success in the "mastery experience".
