One job for every 10 people on the dole in NSW, Victoria | JennieDukeThere are concerns electorates with thousands of people on the dole will be hit hardest if the boost to JobSeeker is cut back in September.
In NSW, the electorates relying the most on the supplement are Fowler , where 15,970 people are on JobSeeker; Blaxland with 14,580; Richmond at 14,160; and McMahon with 13,830. In Sydney 10,930 people are on the dole while 443 are receiving Youth Allowance, totalling $6.26 million in support.
"Many parts of the country were struggling before COVID-19 with [more] people on the old Newstart payment. These areas will be hit hardest," she said. The Labor Party launched a website last week allowing users to search their postcode's reliance on the $70 billion JobKeeper program and has warned more could be left reliant on the dole if it was stopped too soon.
ACOSS chief executive Cassandra Goldie said there had been a groundswell of support for an increase in the rate, with the organisation suggesting a rise of between $185 and $275 a week.
