'One last chance': Labor elders say party review cannot be ignored nswpol | AlexSmithSMH
Senior Labor figures say the troubled NSW branch of the party has "one last chance" to implement reforms or will be "electorally unviable" for the foreseeable future.calling for significant changes including a ban on the general secretary seeking elected office for five years.Photo: Kate Geraghty
Under the reforms, a new state executive board will be established and an audit and risk committee set up, in a move designed to separate the political and governance functions of the party. The nine-member board will replace the governance function of the powerful administrative committee, which will be stripped of its oversight role and refocused to deal with political matters.
"The Lavarch report is important because I think we have to try the course of reform but the anxiety I have, and I think many of the party membership would have, is that there have been several reports before it that were ignored," Mr Della Bosca said.Credit:"We have had distinguished figures like Carr/Bracks/Faulkner deliver reports but these reviews have largely not changed anything.
Mr Iemma said the Lavarch review provided "good accountability, transparency and governance recommendations" and there was "too much at stake" for it not to be implemented."Other reviews have largely been about election defeats but this review has flowed from a corruption inquiry so I cannot see how these recommendations could possibly be ignored.
