The Queensland-based right-wing minor party’s $2.8 million payout was the largest of all except Labor, the Greens and Coalition after the 2019 federal election.

One Nation is poised to reap a public funding boost to underwrite its first recent nationwide election campaign, riding major party dissatisfaction alongside fellow right-wing travellers.

Political experts suggest while part of the effort may be harvesting what exists of such a “freedom” vote, the bulk is more likely to be firming up support in the Senate where the largest party figureheads in Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer are battling for theOr, perhaps, even using the national poll as a springboard into state elections in NSW and Victoria within the next year.

Last election, Palmer’s electoral vehicle ran in 148 of the nation’s 151 seats and gained more than 4 per cent of the vote — and up to 10 per cent — in 41. But his candidates polled below One Nation in all 12 of those across the Queensland, NSW and Victoria electorates where Hanson’s party also ran. In the Senate, One Nation gained 5.4 per cent of first preferences for its grouped candidates nationally, and above 4 per cent in NSW, Queensland, WA and SA. The UAP managed only 2.36 per cent nationally and passed 4 per cent in the Northern Territory., conducted for this masthead, put One Nation’s national vote at 6 per cent and the UAP’s at 4 per cent. UAP’s surveyed vote was 1 point weaker in NSW, with One Nation’s three points weaker in Victoria.
