Houston wins $28.8M federal road safety grant to redesign 7-mile stretch of Bissonnet

The project was among 510 approved by federal officials, totaling $800 million. Of the 37 major awards, Houston’s was the fourth-largest, delivering what officials said was important pedestrian improvements along a fast-moving, crash-prone street“The Bissonnet corridor travels directly through the under-served communities of Alief-Westwood, Gulfton, and Braeburn, disproportionately impacting people of color and families of low income,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said.

“Every year, crashes cost tens of thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions of dollars to our economy; we face a national emergency on our roadways, and it demands urgent action,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. “Bissonnet Street accounts for the highest number of fatal crashes and the second highest number of serious injury crashes across all city-owned streets,” the city said in its application for the federal grant.Of the 19 fatalities along the street from 2014 to 2021, 11 were pedestrians, either as they tried to cross the street or simply walk along it where sidewalks are eroded or marred by previous crashes.
