The band showcase why they are Greater Manchester's newest guitar heroes
"You're all happy aren't you?" says The Lathums frontman Alex Moore as he fiddles with his microphone at the front of the tiny stage, as a sea of camera phones and smiling faces beam back at him.
Its status as Greater Manchester's Town of Culture for 2024 has helped attract the likes of The Zutons and the Inspiral Carpets who played nearby AMP last night, to the town in recent weeks, but you get the feeling this is a real highlight. Add that to the jangly, Smiths-esque guitar sound created by Moore and lead guitarist Scott Concepcion and they certainly have a winning formula.
Thoughts of a Child prompts the first big singalong of the night. The crowd takes over after the first line with one cheeky punter shouting 'You're sacked Alex!' However, there is an almost Country element to some of their songs, best evidenced by their cover of Real Love Baby by Father John Misty, the American singer-songrwriter who made his name as the drummer in Fleet Foxes, another band The Lathums can now certainly hold a candle to.
They may only have two albums under their belt so far in their short career, but given the number and quality of songs on this 20-strong setlist, they could easily pass for a band that has been going for decades. Early songs This Place O Yours and Crying Out are dedicated to those that have been with them 'from the very start.'
