While Luffy is still a while away from becoming One Piece's Pirate King, one piece of official art provides a glimpse at what this may look like.
It is almost guaranteed that Luffy will become One Piece's pirate king and an official piece of Shonen Jump art gives fans a glimpse at what that would look like. This isn't the first time that author Eiichiro Oda has hinted at a future form of Luffy's on the cover of Shonen Jump, featuring Gear 5 in full color months before the anime showed it off. But this is the first piece of art that hints at the true end game of the series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While many fans have become invested in One Piece due to its complex world building and fascinating examination of geopolitics and oppression, at its core the series is a simple tale of a young boy named Luffy striving to become the Pirate King. Over the course of over a thousand chapters, fans have seen Luffy and his crew undergo some major changes, both in terms of emotional and physical growth.
One Shonen Jump Cover Hints At Luffy's Future Look The cover of Weekly Shonen Jump #25 2023 depicts Luffy sitting on a throne, bedecked in a fancy version of his red jacket and wearing a large crown obscuring his classic Straw Hat. These changes aren't to his physical body like Luffy's mindblowing Gear Fifth form or his post-Time Skip form featured, but they do show a drastically different Luffy than fans are used to.
While these changes are somewhat surprising they don't seem to change the core of who Luffy is. He still wears a broad smile on his face, and while he does hold a skull in his hands, its inscription of “king” implies that it is merely symbolic rather than implying Luffy has become a psychopathic murderer. In many ways, this depiction isn’t too surprising for fans who are used to seeing Luffy change his outfit whenever he arrives at a new island.
Of course, despite being drawn by Oda, this cover could be entirely symbolic, not representing Luffy’s actual eventual appearance as the Pirate King. That would preserve the mystery of what Luffy will look like at the end of the series. However, even if this cover doesn’t show exactly how Luffy will look in the future, Oda may borrow elements of it as he brings the character into One Piece’s final chapters.
