Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “must sack” Immigration Minister Andrew Giles after making “one shambolic decision after another” amid a series of migration blunders, Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume said.

Pressure for Mr Giles to go has mounted recently over his issuing of Direction 99 in January 2023, instructing the Australian Appeals Tribunal to give greater tolerance to foreign offenders with “ties to Australia”.intensified Wednesday morning when The Australian revealed a man, who can stay in Australia under Direction 99 , had attacked 25 women and a child.

“Isn’t it extraordinary that ministers are up front, defending Andrew Giles but behind the scenes I think that they’re all ready to move on from this continuing debacle,” the shadow finance minister told Sky News’ Laura Jayes on Wednesday. “Quite frankly now, he’s pointing the finger at his own department, he’s pointing the finger at the AAT,” she said.

When asked whether the Coalition really wanted Direction 99 repealed, Ms Hume told Jayes her party opposed the directive since it first arose. “The minister’s saying ‘no, no AAT, that’s not what I meant’. Well, it is what you meant. It’s there in the direction,” she said. While Ms Hume acknowledged Minister Giles’ “incompetence” was a political bonus for the Coalition, she admitted it hindered action on other key issues.

“Every single question time we want to be asking questions about the economy, we want to be asking questions about why inflation isn’t coming down faster, we want to be asking questions about why Australians are paying mortgages that are much higher than they need to be.
