As the two-week youth curfew in Alice Springs hits the halfway point, here's what locals think about the measure.
The "emergency situation" declared by Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler last Wednesday saw young people restricted from entering the town centre from 6pm to 6amThe ABC hit the streets to ask Alice Springs locals what they think of the measure. Here's what they said.
"I definitely think it needs to be extended for another four weeks, and it needs to be pushed out into Araluen, into the east side suburbs."Shaneena Luckey, a First Nations woman in Alice Springs, said the curfew was a positive step, and should be extended for a number of months. "Keep it going, probably should have it for a couple of months, curfews, kids are staying off the streets.""I've noticed there's not as many on the street, it's reassuring."Armani Francois said the curfew was "unfair" on her and her peers, and that it impeded their freedom and ability to exercise.
"Maybe with a curfew — and it's probably going to need longer — but if you break that cycle and little Johnny's sitting at home watching telly or playing sport in the backyard … they might say 'let's go and kick the footy' instead of 'let's go and run amok in town'."Crystal Pollitt, who owns a dog grooming business outside the curfew area, said her commercial property was targeted by vandals on Easter Friday morning.
