The monthly series is having its one-year anniversary event, Friday, Aug. 25.This Friday marks the one year anniversary of Word Open Mic Night hosted by Emdash in the independent bookstore’s Jersey City location.
Gao wanted a few different things for her iteration of an open mic. Among her search for local venues, she perused the website of Word Bookstore with its new, post-Grove Street location in Jersey City at 29 McWilliams Place. Gao found they didn’t have anything exactly like what she wanted to do, so she reached out and talked with their program coordinator.
Gao got her wish to hone that sense of community through open mics at a non-chain bookstore, in addition to the event’s featured readers getting some form of payment. “I wanted it to be free and I’m fortunate that we’ve maintained it as a free event … in the various cities I’ve dilly-dallied through, there’s a cover.”
Word Open Mic Night has one stalwart vendor Gao often features on posters for the show. But she’s hoping to add to that as well, having modeled the approach of having a vendor on hand from the Sunday Jump open mic series in LA’s Historic Filipinotown.
