New exchange sites have been set up at police stations across Victoria in a bid to promote safer transactions for buyers and sellers using Facebook Marketplace. There are now 35 Safer Exchange Sites at metro and regional 24-hour stations, which are all fully lit with CCTV cameras. The roll-out of the sites follows a six-month trial at a few 24-hour police stations across Melbourne’s northeast in mid-2022.
In February, a young man had his $2000 Samsung stolen stolen by a man who pretended to be an interested buyer on Facebook. Police said mobile phones were the most common high-value item stolen when online trading meetups go awry. As the popularity of buying and selling items online continues to grow, Commander Tim Tully said the safe exchange sites were a way for police to get ahead of an alarming and growing trend.
