Matty Ferguson says the incident wouldn’t have happened in any other city in which he has partied during his professional DJ-ing career.
A Sydney DJ says he was manhandled by security guards and thrown out of a pub in the city’s south after his set because he was wearing a hat, describing it as an interaction that would not happen anywhere else in the world.
“I took three more steps, he runs back over and grabs me with both hands and goes, ‘I told you to take your f---ing hat off’. I admit I was a bit of a smart arse, I told him to leave his small man attitude at the door. [Then] I got manhandled by two security guards and fully thrown on to the street for wearing a hat in a venue.”
“I feel like that shit does not happen anywhere else in the world,” said Ferguson, 27, a professional DJ for six years. “I’ve partied all around the world and I can’t imagine anything happening like that. Sydney definitely has the propensity to over-police.” Rodrigues called on Sydneysiders to stop talking down the city’s nightlife: “It’s just not accurate”.Ferguson said not all bouncers were the same, and particularly praised those at the Bridge Hotel in Rozelle. But he said others got an ego boost out of accosting patrons. “Licensing laws are so strict, they have all these little rules they have to follow and they kind of get a power trip about it all.
